Shaykh Isa Husayn Johansson is an Islamic scholar hailing from Sweden. Embracing Islam in his teens, his journey of seeking knowledge began shortly thereafter when he set out for Syria to sit at the feet of the scholars. Whilst there, he was exposed to traditional circles of learning, and returned to Europe after a brief but eye-opening journey.
He has since studied the traditional curriculum of the Indian subcontinent, known as Dars-e-Nizami, spending a number of years engaging the Islamic sciences, such as the Arabic language, Quranic exegesis (Tafsir), Hadith Nomenclature (Mustalah al-Hadith), canonical works of Hadith, theology (῾Aqidah), jurisprudence (Fiqh), and legal theory (Usul al-Fiqh).
He is a longtime student of the prominent hadith-scholar and Madina Institute founding director, ‘Allamah Shaykh Dr. Muhammad bin Yahya al-Ninowy, under whose tutelage he has been for the better part of a decade, and from whom he has received authorization (ijazah) to teach the Islamic sciences.
He has undertaken further studies and research in Southeast Asia, including advanced studies in the Shafi’i school and comparative jurisprudence, and received training in issuing legal edicts (fatwa).
Shaykh Isa’s thirst for knowledge has taken him around the globe, and he has received authorization (ijazah) in the various Islamic sciences from a plethora of scholars, and has been given unbroken chains of transmission (asanid) reaching back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He has auditory transmission in many of the major books of Hadith, as well as rare classical texts.
Aside from the aforementioned Shaykh Muhammad al-Ninowy, among the shuyukh whose feet he sat at, learned from, or was authorized by, are his father-in-law Shaykh Hidayatullah Shah, Shaykh Ibrahim Kassim, Shaykh Seraj Hendricks, Shaykh Badruddin Yahya, Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi, Shaykh Nuh Ali Salman al-Quda, Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Kattani, Shaykh Ahmad Ali Surati, Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Shaykh Muhammad Fatih al-Kittani, Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, and many others.
Shaykh Isa is a member of Madina Institute’s international faculty, the Fatwa Department of the Shafi’i Institute (Shafiifiqh.com), and a teacher at the Islamic Academy, Sweden.
